Geography Awareness Week 1

November 15-21 is Geography Awareness Week. Maps have come a long way, baby! They are no longer just in an atlas at the library or a hard-to-fold sheet in your glove compartment. Maps are everywhere. With GPS systems, satellite systems, and the internet, maps more accessible than ever, and people are using them in amazing new ways.

Teach your children about geography, maps, and the world around them with these ideas from two amazing lensmasters:

Prematurity Awareness Day 1

According to The March of Dimes, every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States.  Premature birth is the number one cause of death during the first month of life.

Bloggers Unite - Fight For PreemiesToday I am blogging on behalf of Baby Jerry, once a premature baby, and now a happy toddler.

Homemade Bread Day 1

It used to be that women in the home made bread nearly every day.  After 1928, with the invention of sliced bread, all that started to change.

But the fact of the matter is that homemade bread is wonderful.  It smells great, tastes great, and is affordable and nutritious.  Homemade bread also creates memories.  There is just something about homemade bread.  After all, it is probably the only food that is eaten regularly in nearly every civilization worldwide.  That can’t be a coincidence.

America Recycles Day 0

It has been estimated that approximately 60% of our rubbish thrown away today could be recycled.

I think there is a lot of confusion on what can be recycled and how to go about about the recycling process. Also, many don’t fully understand the significance of recycling.

To try to remove some of the confusion, here are 50 Things You Can Recycle from TheGreenerMe.

World Diabetes Day 0

It is estimated that 23.6 million people have diabetes, 5.7 million of which are undiagnosed. Cases of diabetes have doubled from 1990 to 2005.  (source)

Diabetes is serious and it kills.  I encourage everyone to read the story of Mary Kathryn who lost her battle with diabetes before she even knew she was battling it:

Sudden Onset Juvenile Diabetes

Thank you, Christene, for sharing her story.

Consider building your own lens to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.

World Kindness Day 0

It is always amazing to me how one person doing a mean thing can ruin your day, and cause you to potentially do a mean thing that would ruin someones else’s day  (and the cycle goes on).

But it works in reverse, too.  If you do one really kind thing, that could brighten someone’s day and inspire them to do a kind thing for someone else (and hopefully the cycle goes on).

That is what World Kindness Day is all about.

LeanneChesser does a great job explaining it here: Random Acts of Kindness Day

National Young Readers Week 0

November 9-13 is National Young Readers Week, co-sponsored by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Pizza Hut runs the Book It! program and does a lot to encourage children to read. As a former Book It! kid, I know that this is a valuable program.

I believe that the best way to get kids to read is to give them a GREAT book – a story they would enjoy and want to read. One amazing book can do a lot to foster the love of reading.

LindaJM has made a series of lenses on Newbery Award Winning Books. This is the perfect place to look for extraordinary children literature.

If you are looking for a way to actively encourage reading, consider Mentoring Children through ePal Program (by mbgphoto).

Birthday of The United States Marine Corps 3

The United States Marine Corps was created on November 10, 1775 by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress. There are currently just over 203,000 United States Marine Corps active duty Marines, and just under 40,000 reserve Marines.

Check out this great lens by Susan52 for some amazing movies featuring US Marines:
