National Blood Donor Month 1

Jan12

January is National Blood Donor Month.  Volunteer blood donation is crucial to the thousands that receive blood each year.  Both my mother and my sister have had to receive blood, and I am very thankful to the generous people who donated.  I myself am a donor, and I hope that , if able, you are as well.

National Hot Tea Month 2

January is National Hot Tea Month.  While I do drink tea, I am no expert in tea.  There is a great deal to learn about tea – it’s history, its variety, and its uses.

So, here we go on a journey around the world to learn about tea:

Universal Letter-Writing Week 0

Today begins Universal Letter-Writing Week.  People aren’t writing letters as much as they used to (except it seems cover letters, reference letters, and credit dispute letters).  It is a real shame.  The letters of the past tell great stories and mark them in time for future generations to stumble upon.  Emails just won’t do that.

So take time this week and write a letter or two.  Write to an old friend, distant family, or just to someone you think might need one.

National Braille Week 1

Jan7

We are in the middle of National Braille Week which runs from January 4-10, 2010.

Braille opens up another world to the blind.  It is used in over 140 countries, and it has given immeasurable opportunities to people who are blind.
Helen Keller was both blind and deaf, but learned to read braille.

Epiphany 0

Jan6

Today marks Epiphany, also known as Little Christmas, or Three Kings Day.

Epiphany celebrates Jesus being revealed to the world, and specifically the Magi who sought him.

I’m sure you are familiar with the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” – Epiphany was what it was counting down to.

National Bird Day 0

Jan5

Today is National Bird Day.  According to Born Free USA, nearly 12 percent of the world’s 9,800 bird species may face extinction within the next century.

Birds are beauty, music, and inspiration.

Sir Isaac Newton’s Birthday 0

Jan4

Okay, so we’ve got two geeky days in a row. But, we’re all geeks here, so I think we can handle it.

Today is the birthday of Sir Isaac Newton.  You remember, he wrote those three Laws of Motion.

Chris Farmer has applied those laws to leadership in Isaac Newton’s Three Laws of Leadership.

This is how I like to imagine Sir Isaac Newton (even with the narration by Morgan Freeman). Don’t spoil my mental image with reality.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Birthday 0

Jan3

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892.  He was “father” of modern fantasy literature.  With The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, he changed the world.  He created high fantasy like no other.

Tolkien has inspired the works of MANY – writers, artists, filmographers, musicians.

Tinw describers herself as one who “loves the myth and magic of Tolkien’s Middle-earth”.  It is clear that is the truth.
