Uncle Sam 0

Today is Uncle Sam’s Birthday…well…sort of. Today is the anniversary of the date (September 3, 1813) that the term “Uncle Sam” was first used as a nickname for the United States Government in the media – the Troy Post. At this point image we envision as being Uncle Sam had not yet been established – that didn’t happen until 1917!

The term “Uncle Sam” was already in use verbally, since it was coined by the US soldiers during the war of 1812.

Uncle Sam evolved from Samuel Wilson, born September 13, 1766, who lived in Troy, NY. Learn the story of how Samuel Wilson became Uncle Sam at Uncle Sam: An American National Symbol.

Today is Flag Day In The USA!!!!

Flag Day may be overlooked in some parts of the country, but where I live – the home place of Uncle Sam, and the town that hosts the country’s largest Flag Day parade – it’s a big thing!

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 0

On December 7, 1941, The United States of America was attacked, on its own soil by the Japanese. Hawaii was attacked by 353 airplanes by surprise in the early morning. 2,402 were killed and another 1,282 wounded. It marked USA’s entrance into WWII.

Sadly, I could not find a squidoo lens worthy of the day. If you have one, please submit it in the comments.

Navy Day 0

Today is Navy Day…we’ll maybe it is…at least it used to be.  It’s a long story.  Basically Navy Day was October 27th until they discovered that the Navy’s birthday is actually is October 13th.  So they changed it, but October 27th had already stuck.

Anyway….since we missed October 13th (because this blog hadn’t been born yet), we’ll celebrate today as Navy Day with this lens from clouda9:
